Deciding when it’s appropriate to move out for your remodel.

Living through a home remodel can be tough, and sometimes, the best move is to literally move out. Packing up and staying somewhere else during the chaos might sound like a hassle, but it can actually make the whole process way less stressful. No dust in your coffee, no waking up to hammering at 8 a.m., and no squeezing around ladders to get to the bathroom. Plus, it gives your contractors the space they need to get things done faster. Taking a break from your home during a remodel might be the smartest (and most peaceful) choice you can make. We highly suggest that you leave your home during a remodel and these are the reasons why, coming from an experienced San Antonio based home remodeler and designer!

Large home remodels.

If your remodel is a small bathroom or section of your house, there really isn’t any need to move out if you can manage your daily life around it with ease. However, whole home remodels do take time and space, so moving out is definitely the way to go. Also, if your remodel includes all of your bathrooms at once, it’s time to move out.

Floor replacements.

Replacing floors requires a lot of work, including moving furniture, moving and organizing wood or tile, cutting, sanding, measuring, cleaning—the works! We definitely recommend moving out if a large portion of your floor is being replaced as it will definitely save you a headache from all the noise and you won’t have to deal with limited access to rooms or move your furniture around.

Noise.

Remodels not only take time, but they are noisy! If you can get through a day with constant banging and the sound of mechanical tools, power to you. If you can’t, for your own sanity, we advise that you plan a short-term move.

Mental health.

Being around an investment 24/7 can cause one to overthink and stress. It is much better to take a step back and let the professionals handle the project while you get to detox away from all that work. Then, when the remodel is finished, you get to reap the benefits without any of the hassle.

Time.

When you’re not present, the contractors can get their work done faster. This is no personal offense, but when you’re in the zone and the homeowner isn’t trying to pour you a cup of iced tea or talk about the latest sports game, the job could potentially get done on time, if not sooner.

In the end, moving out during a remodel can save you a ton of stress. Sure, it takes a little extra planning, but getting a break from the noise, dust, and constant activity can make a huge difference in your mental and physical health. Whether you crash with friends, stay with family, or rent a short-term spot, giving yourself a breather from the construction can make the whole renovation feel way more manageable, and offer a better experience.
